The Importance of communication skills for engineers

"Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership.  The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."
Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp

I agree with the statement given by Gilbert Amelio. Good communication skill is a necessary attribute that a leader should have. A leader should have the ability to motivate and empower their team to accomplish their shared objectives. Good communication skills are important as they help leaders clearly define goals for their team members. A clearly defined message, information, or instruction will further motivate team members and increase their productivity and efficiency.

Leaders with poor communication skills can affect the team negatively. Amelio says, " If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter.". This is especially true because, if a leader is unable to convey a message effectively, their team will not be fully engaged thus reducing their sense of motivation, urgency, and productivity. This shows the leader's incapability in getting his messages across.

Team members rely on their leaders to offer guidance and motivation for the team to perform effectively. With good communication skills from the leader, the team will have a clearer sense of direction to perform in the workplace. Thus, it is essential and critical that a leader should develop good communication skills for effective leadership.

Critical Reflection

Module learning: As the trimester comes to a close, I am confident to say that I have achieved the 2 goals that I set for myself at the beginning of this module. Through the various assignments and activities, I have grown to be a better writer and communicator. My first goal is to become a more confident person in terms of communicating with my peers. Throughout this trimester, I was given a lot of opportunities to work on my communication skills. Through class discussions and project meetings, I have learned to express myself more clearly and confidently. I have also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of effective communication that can be useful in the real world. These opportunities have helped me understand the importance of effective communication, and I am eager to continue developing my skills in this area. My next goal was to improve my writing and critical thinking skills. I am glad to say that I had made significant progress in this area. The summary reade...

Summary Draft 2: SolarNova Programme

According to the Housing Development Board (HDB) (2022) article, "HDB to Bring Solar Energy to Over 8,000 Blocks Through SolarNova Programme," HDB announces its seventh solar leasing tender for the SolarNova Programme. The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) is co-directing the programme, which aims to expedite the installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems in Singapore. This initiative is also a crucial element of the HDB Green Towns Programme (GTP), which strives to make HDB towns more sustainable by reducing energy usage with solar panels. With this initiative to promote greater usage of solar panels, carbon emissions can be greatly reduced thus mitigating climate change. Currently, HDB has committed to a solar capacity of 380 megawatt-peak (MWp). With its new tender, HDB announces a target of 540MWp by 2030 for over 1,290 HDB blocks and 99 government sites. Mr Tan (as cited in HDB, 2022), states that this programme, as a vital part of the HDB GTP, aids HDB in achi...

Typical drain cleaning and maintenance

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) manages Singapore’s water supply and drainage systems, including the maintenance of drainage systems to prevent water ponding and flooding (Public utility Board, 2023b). PUB conducts regular inspections to detect any clogging or damage to the system and performs structural repairs and maintenance as needed (Public Utility Board, n.d). The Department of Public Cleanliness (DPC) conducts regular drain cleaning (Kiasu Plumber, 2020). Equipment such as special nozzles, combination tankers, and high-pressure jetting equipment is used for this process (Lian Shing, n.d.). This cleaning process helps to remove debris and waste that may be blocking the drain flow. On top of that, collection devices such as float booms and litter traps are also placed strategically along the drains(Kiasu Plumber, 2020). This proactive approach to maintenance and cleaning helps to prevent water ponding and flooding, while also protecting public health in Singapore.
